Most Marketplace plans must provide breastfeeding equipment and counseling for pregnant and nursing women.
You may be able to get help with breastfeeding at no cost
Health insurance plans must provide breastfeeding support, counseling, and equipment for the duration of breastfeeding. These services may be provided before and after birth.
This applies to Marketplace plans and all other health insurance plans, except for grandfathered plans.
Coverage of breast pumps
Your health insurance plan must cover the cost of a breast pump. It may be either a rental unit or a new one you’ll keep. Your plan may have guidelines on whether the covered pump is manual or electric, the length of the rental, and when you’ll receive it (before or after birth).
The ACA requires all new insurance policies in both the individual and group markets, and including the state and federal health insurance Marketplaces, to 1) provide coverage for certain preventive services, including comprehensive prenatal and postnatal lactation support, counseling, and equipment rental for the duration of breastfeeding, as recommended by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA),29 and 2) to provide that coverage with no cost sharing by the individual insured.27 The requirement, referred to herein as §2713, became effective for all non-grandfathered health insurance plans or policies issued on or after August 1, 2012. Grandfathered plans (i.e., those in existence on the date of passage of the ACA) are not included in this requirement.30
